Showcasing the beauty and diversity of Black hair, we see Alyssa Marissa rock dozens of magical hairstyles from “big puffs Afro puffs” to French braids and everything in between. Although Alyssa loves her hair, it sometimes brings her negative attention and on the first day of third grade, she is nervous to go to school. What will the other kids think of her hair?
Despite a bumpy time at recess, in the end it is Alyssa’s big bouncy magical hair that leads to her making a new best friend and winning the admiration of her entire class. For every girl who has ever been teased or made to feel different because of her hair or the way she looks, the story of Alyssa Marissa will teach her to love and celebrate herself. As Alyssa’s mom tells her: “Never apologize for being unique”. What a great message for our own daughters and granddaughters!
“Every child should see themselves, their family and their community in a book.”
